Understanding Causes of Skin Aging Is the First Step in Good Beauty Routine

Smiling older woman embracing herself

Even though aging is beautiful, there are some causes of aging that can make your skin look older than it really is. Those causes will make your biological age older than chronological age and that’s something that is not good, not just for your appearance but for your overall health. To fully understand the skin aging and its causes, let’s first find out all about the first signs of aging.

Signs of skin aging

Wrinkles and fine lines

Wrinkles and fine lines are the most common signs of skin aging. As you get older, your skin loses its elasticity and becomes thinner and less oily. This leaves your skin more vulnerable to the sun's damaging UV rays, which can cause wrinkles and fine lines. Also, wrinkles and fine lines appear when collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid are no longer produced with the same abundance as when you were younger.

The gray complexion

One of the most visible signs of skin aging is a gray complexion. As you get older, your skin's natural pigment diminishes, which can make you look pale or washed out.

Dark circles and bags under the eyes

The thinning of the skin and loss of elasticity that comes with age can also lead to dark circles and bags under the eyes. These are caused by the accumulation of fluids and fats in the area around the eyes.

Droopy eyelids

As you age, the skin around your eyes can become thin and sag, which can lead to droopy eyelids.

Dry skin

Dry skin is another common sign of aging. As you get older, your skin produces less oil, which can make it dry and flaky.

Age spots

Age spots are flat, brown, or black spots that occur on sun-exposed areas of the skin. They're also called liver spots or solar lentigines. Age spots are not harmful, but they can be a sign of skin damage from ultraviolet (UV) radiation.

Sagging skin

As you age, your skin loses its elasticity and becomes thinner. This can cause sagging, especially on the face, neck, and hands.

Dehydrated skin

Dehydration is a common sign of aging skin. Dehydration occurs when the skin doesn't have enough moisture. This can make the skin dry, dull, and wrinkled.

What causes skin aging?

Well... Age!

The main cause of skin aging is the natural process of cell regeneration. As we get older, our cells regenerate more slowly, and our skin becomes drier and less elastic. This creates an environment that is perfect for the growth of blemishes - especially since they're so easy to spot! Melanocytes also decrease with time; this means spots will start appearing on your formerly flawless complexion as well. From the age of 25, collagen production slows down and your skin becomes less elastic; furrows deepen while wrinkles appear. Without collagen and elastin in your skin, your skin starts to lose firmness.

Makeup

Makeup can cause premature aging. If you don't remove your makeup properly, it can clog your pores and lead to breakouts. Makeup also contains chemicals that can damage your skin over time. Therefore, it's important to choose the makeup that is non-comedogenic and gentle on your skin.  [caption id="attachment_11503" align="aligncenter" width="802"] Wrinkles and fine lines appear when collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid are no longer produced with the same abundance.[/caption]

Micellar water

If it is effective, however, it is important not to trust its name: micellar water is not water! You must rinse your skin thoroughly after using it to remove make-up. Micellar water contains surfactants with detergent action that seriously dries out the skin in the long term.

The tobacco

Cigarette smoke is not only harmful to your lungs, it's also one of the worst things you can do to your skin. Smoking decreases blood flow, which means less oxygen and nutrients are getting to your skin cells. This can lead to premature wrinkles and a dull complexion.

The alcohol

Drinking alcohol can also have a negative impact on your skin. It dehydrates your skin, which can lead to wrinkles and dryness. Alcohol can also cause redness and inflammation.

Poor diet

A poor diet can also have a negative impact on your skin. Eating unhealthy foods can lead to breakouts and a lackluster complexion. It's important to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, which are packed with antioxidants that can help protect your skin from the damage caused by free radicals.

Poor hydration

Drinking enough water is essential for healthy skin. Water helps to flush out toxins and keep your skin hydrated. If you don't drink enough water, your skin will start to look dry and tired

Stress

Stress can also have a negative effect on your skin. When you're stressed, your body releases cortisol, which can lead to inflammation and acne breakouts. Stress can also cause your skin to become dry and irritated.

Tiredness

Skin repairs itself while you sleep. If you don't sleep enough, your skin will not have time to recover. That's how tiredness can also cause your skin to age prematurely. When you're tired, your skin becomes dull and lackluster and it leaves marks on your face like dark circles and fine lines.

Exposure to the sun

The sun is one of the biggest contributors to skin aging. UV radiation can damage your DNA, which can lead to premature wrinkles and age spots. It's important to protect your skin from the sun by using sunscreen and wearing a hat.

Pollution

Pollution can also cause skin aging. The pollution particles can clog your pores and lead to breakouts. They can also cause inflammation and damage your skin cells.

I think stress and lack of sleep are two worst factors for aging. If only we could get enough sleep everyday, things would be so much different!
