Everything You Need to Know About Oil Cleansing

Facial Cleansing Oil
Oil to clean your face? Absolutely! The oil cleansing method has been on the skincare scene for a little while now, but there are still some who are - understandably - hesitant to jump on the bandwagon. Slathering an extra layer of oil on your skin sounds like the last thing you’d want to, especially if you have oily or acne-prone skin. But as it turns out, this approach to cleansing works for all skin types.

How Does the Oil Cleansing Method Work?

Based on the principle that like dissolves like, the oil cleansing method involves using oil - instead of soap - to clear away dirt and oil without stripping the skin of its natural moisture. It is used by some as the first step in the popular ‘double cleanse’ to remove makeup before washing their face, and by others as their sole cleansing method. Either way, all you need is a soft wash cloth and oil.

Step 1

Place the hot, damp washcloth on your face for 20 seconds, allowing the steam to loosen any dirt and oil.

Step 2

Apply your cleansing oil, and massage it in with your fingertips for 30 seconds.

Step 3

Use the washcloth to gently wipe away the oil, and voila!

Which Cleansing Oil is Best for Me?

First things first, determine your skin type. Then, take a peek at our list of the best facial cleansing oils for you.

Dry Skin

Look for argan or shea oils for complete hydration, without a greasy feeling. We recommend: Josie Maran Argan Cleansing Oil

Sensitive Skin

Stick to all-natural blends, or DIY your own with some cold-pressed coconut oil. We recommend: Simple Kind to Skin Cleansing Oil

Oily Skin

The astringent properties found in tea tree and peppermint oils are great for oilier skin. You can also look for cleansers with rosehip oil, which has a natural drying effect. We recommend: Boscia Makeup-Breakup Cool Cleansing Oil

Acne-Prone Skin

Like those with oily skin, you’ll want to look for oils with astringent properties, or even acne-fighting ingredients like salicylic acid. We recommend: Shu Umera Porefinist Cleansing Oil

Combination Skin

Olive oil and Vitamin E work to purify oily areas while moisturizing dry patches. We recommend: DHC Deep Cleansing Oil

Normal Skin

Keep things lightweight to maintain skin’s moisture balance. We recommend: Shiseido Perfect Cleansing Oil   Whichever oil cleanser you choose, just remember using it with your LUNA facial cleansing brush is a no-no, as it may damage the silicone. In need of a LUNA-friendly cleanser? Look no further than the FOREO Day & Night Cleansers - they were literally made for each other. Or, check out the Cleanser for Men (insider tip: it smells uh-mazing).

Hi Aksa! I Don't see why not but we recommend not to use high oil content products with our devices as this can damage the silicone. I hope this helps :)

Hola Angela, después de su descripción, diría que vaya con el aceite para la piel propenso al acné como el aceite de limpieza Porefinist de Shu Umera. Espero que esto ayude :)

Hi there! The astringent properties found in tea tree and peppermint oils are great for oilier skin. You can also look for cleansers with rosehip oil, which has a natural drying effect. Jojoba, olive squalane and argan oils also do the trick.
The oil that we recommended in the article for your skin type is Boscia Makeup-Breakup Cool Cleansing Oil. Give it a try and let us know :D
